ARE YOU A SHEEP OR A GOAT?

“…whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.”

-Matthew 25:40

I heard this quote many times growing up. Mostly because I was raised in the Christian church, attended Sunday school, church, and even vacation bible school so the words from Matthew 25:40 were always familiar to me. When I got older, my mom shared with me the importance of these words specifically to our family. Her father, my grandfather, was a Southern Baptist minister and he frequently said this was his favorite bible verse. Knowing that he spent his life growing a church community in Jamaica, Queens, NY, a city filled with “the least of these,” it makes sense to me why he clung so strongly to those words.

My mom, as most minister’s daughters do, struggled with her faith most of her adult life; however, she too embraced these words and felt that her work as a nurse was her way of living them as my grandfather did. In February of 2013, I had the idea for a business, Financial Gym, a financial services company with a mission to serve people of all financial shapes and sizes; and on the day I had the idea, the words “whatever you do for the least of these you do for me” came into my mind.

What’s funny is that I’ve clung to those words for over a decade now and yet never went back to the source material to get the greater message of the verse until after Kamala Harris was defeated in the presidential election. I woke up on November 6, 2024 with a tremendous sense of dread for what was to happen in our country and I looked up this bible verse for comfort. I felt in my gut that those of us who voted for Kamala were doing more than casting a vote, we were making a karmic decision for the type of people we would be on this planet.

If you read the entire passage, you see these words come from the parable where Jesus is talking about the final judgment for people and how God would separate us into two groups, the sheep and the goats. The sheep were escalated to the right hand of God and told they would inherit the kingdom of God because when God was in need, they fed, clothed, welcomed and housed Him. The goats were sent to His left side and banished to hell because they did not take care of Him.

Both groups wondered where they saw God and either helped or neglected Him and He informed them that in every human soul we cared for, we were caring for God.

It seems like almost 75 million of us in America are sheep. Unfortunately, we’re living in a country with too many goats. On March 15, 2025, when I had my mental health breakdown, part of the messaging I was getting from my spirit guides was that we have to save people. We have to help people see the light, turn back from the choices they’ve made and help them enter the kingdom of God. We live in dark times where spirituality and faith are at all time lows, but there is still time to make better decisions.

YOU have the ability to change your ways. YOU have the ability to be a sheep and continue to take care of our flock. YOU have the ability to stop being a goat (aka supporting MAGA philosophies) and take care of your fellow person. It’s your choice. Please know the Collective is here to support you on your journey and we will always pray for and welcome in the goats when they’re ready to make the change.
